It’s great to be known for your shoes, better to be known for your sole.
Have a heart, give a sole.
Take a stand or step aside.
The message is the medium.
What you stand for is even more important than what you stand in.
To be aware is more important than what you wear.

These are all Kenneth Cole’s witticisms. Although he claims to be apolitical, and rather “social and human” through his deliberate ad campaign, he is everything political. He affects the body politic in a rather totalitarian way, which is to say physically in apparel, psychically in state of mind, and psychologically in stirring the identity, identification, and thoughts of the individual and the collective. More importantly, his target demographic is the 18-45 year old working “middle” class – a class savvy and technologically capable of effecting change, empowering movements, and overthrowing governments.
I do not condone advertising. It is part of the capitalist machine and where there is capitalism there can be no democracy. However, I am acutely aware of a generation today that can not find its voice except through a ‘Coleticist’ type slogan. Whether it is a shy generation, or a generation that wants to speak but can not phrase the choice words in such a way as to be the most effective, then I expect this to be the reason for their successful reliance and endorsement-through-purchase of these pointed advertisements.
So in the case of this type of advertising, is it righting the wrong, or ‘lefting’ the right?
There is a deliberate rhetoric and mentality that ‘Coleturizes’ – one that stimulates, effects, and attempts to catalyze potentiality into actuality. In a manner of speaking, ‘Coleturation’ is very much a micromanifestation of hyphenation. Hyphenation is potential of potential that is the activating connecting dash between ideology and praxis. It is the burst of infinitesimal kilojoules, if I can so quantify it. In “Coleturation’ and in hyphenation there exists the commonality of truth in potentiality to act, effect, create, stir and change for the collective good – a good that transcends all nationalities, geographies, cultures, and limitations of time and pace.
Nietzsche extolled a superman and wrote of the will to truth as the will to power. In these concepts – truth and power – is the birth of potentiality inherent in hyphenation. It is the unquantifiable phenomena that create beyond time. It is the creation of the source. And that is truth: truth from creation, truth from creative power.
